TOP TEN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN PORTUGAL

Once a great seafaring kingdom that dominated trade routes to Africa, South America and Asia, today Portugal’s grandiose past can still be seen in the buildings, monuments and museums of this fascinating country. Indeed, when it comes to the sights, there’s simply loads to do – meaning it’s a challenge to select a list of just the top ten tourist attractions in Portugal.
However, we’ve considered, cogitated and deliberated to pick out ten of the best sights in Portugal for visitors to explore and - while we’ve gone for the more obvious attractions - we’ve also slipped in a couple of less recognisable suggestions too…
So whether you plan to walk the Medieval streets of Lisbon and Porto, or head to the border of Spain where walled towns separate the two countries, you’ll constantly be absorbing a fascinating chapter of Portugal’s past. And for a more comprehensive list of Portuguese visitor attractions, visit our full historical sites of Portugal page.

Pena National Palace top 10 Portugal
With its breathtaking location and fairy-tale colour palette of ice cream pink, yellow and blue all flowing seamlessly around the blend of Moorish-pseudo-medieval architecture, it’s not surprising that the Pena National Palace is top of our list of tourist attractions in Portugal. This masterpiece of 19th century romanticism was built by Prussian architect and engineer Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege. Today it’s open to visitors, who will be just as overwhelmed by its over-the-top interior as its exterior. What’s more, as impressive and whimsical as the Palace is, its setting - atop a cliff and surrounded by beautiful maintained park - is equally stunning. Pena National Palace has got our stamp of approval, as well as UNESCO’s.

Belem Tower - Portugal Top Ten
Like Portugal itself, the Belem Tower is understated - and magnificent. Rising majestically from the banks of the River Tagus in Lisbon, with its interesting asymmetric shape and ornately decorated turrets, it simply doesn’t have a bad angle. Even its derriere looks good, which we all know is no easy feat. Looks aside, the Belem Tower is a symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discovery. It was built between 1515 and 1520 to celebrate the expedition to India of Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese explorer, and it’s one of the finer examples of the Manueline style of architecture. One of the major tourist attractions of Portugal, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site - no surprise there - and we recommend visiting either at sunrise or sunset for the best snaps.

Ajuda National Palace Portugal Top Ten
For a brief period of time, Ajuda National Palace served as the official residence of the Portuguese royal family. Then Portugal became a republic and the royal family had to move out. Their loss is certainly posterity’s gain. A stunning example of neoclassical architecture, which an equally opulent interior, Ajuda National Palace is a must on any Lisbon tour. On top of hosting dignitaries, it’s also an art museum.

Portugal Top 10 - St Georges Castle
St George’s Castle sits perched atop the highest hill of Lisbon, which makes it the perfect destination to go to for amazing city views. That’s not the only string in its bow though; its history is as epic as its setting. The earliest mentions of St George’s Castle date back to the eleventh century. Then, in 1147, it was conquered by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques. It served as the official residence of the royal family from 12th until the 16th century when it was abandoned in favour of other more glamourous palaces. Despite going into disrepair from then, it’s still a formidable sight to see and provides city-vistas that are simply unbeatable.

Conimbriga - Top Portuguese Tourist Attractions
Deserving of its place among the top 10 visitor attractions in Portugal for its mosaic floors alone, the ruins of Conimbriga are probably the best example of Portugal’s Roman past in the country. The settlement has been inhabited since the ninth century BC and was a prosperous town under the Romans. On top of the mosaics, visitors should also check out the houses and public buildings, as well as the Roman roads and the impressive public baths which had complex and intriguing heating systems installed.

Jeronimas Monastery - Portugal visitor sites list
One word springs to mind when walking into the Jeronimas Monastery and that’s simply: wow. The monastery was built at the same time as the Belem Tower under the orders of King Manuel and also celebrates the successful voyage to India of the explorer Vasco Da Gama. These two superstars of Portugese history are now buried within its truly mind-blowing walls. When visiting the Monastery be sure to look up: tall, impressive columns give way to a dramatic ceiling. It’s also three tourist attractions of Portugal for the price of one: Jeronimos Monastery is now home to the National Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum.

Castelo dos Mouros -Top 10 Portugal
Rising 412m above sea level and boasting incredible panoramic views, this ruined castle rises majestically above its surrounding forest and morning mists. While it was originally built by the Moors around the eighth century, as rumour has it, most of what’s on display today only goes back to the nineteenth century. When the clouds move away, the views of neighbouring palaces and the Atlantic are breathtaking. If you want to feel like royalty, you can get to the castle via horse and carriage. Athletic and adventurous types might want to walk up along a lovely forest trail.

Silves Castle Portugal
Few walks will be more memorable than a walk along the walls of Silves Castle, one of the most famous Portuguese tourist attractions. Made from sandstone, this imposing Medieval castle defended a once-thriving Moorish settlement in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Whilst the allure of Silves Castle might be its well-preserved defensive walls, turrets and gates, other remains, of buildings and cisterns, are also worth exploring.

Castelo de Almourol
Castelo de Almourol is the stuff of legends; located on an island which was once a Roman fort, the castle was built by Gualdim Pais, Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Templar, in 1171. The castle’s distinctive - and remote - location on a river, and its impressive history, make it one of the best hidden gems among Portugal’s visitor attractions. Little wonder then that poets have been inspired by this memorial to Portugal’s Age of Chivalry - it’s as dreamy as it is domineering.

Batalha Monastery Portugal's top tourist sights
The truly spectacular Batalha Monastery was dedicated to the Virgin Mary to commemorate a major military victory at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. It now stands as one of Portugal’s top attractions and is one of the most incredible buildings in the country. This stunningly ornate convent and masterpiece of Gothic art was built under the reign of King Joao I, who was later buried here. Successive kings continued to add to the Monastery, creating a fascinating fusion of history and architecture and a destination not to miss.

Carthage top tourist attraction Tunisia
Perched front and centre at the very top of our list of Tunisian attractions is the ancient city Carthage. The astounding ruins of this once-mighty city are vast, varied and hugely atmospheric. The subject of myth and legend, it was here - according to Virgil - that its founding queen Dido committed suicide atop a funeral pyre. Carthage was one of the most powerful cities of the ancient world and the capital of the Carthaginian Empire, which dominated much of the western Mediterranean. A must-see for any trip to Tunisia, Carthage is probably the most famous and popular of all visitor attractions in Tunisia.

2. Dougga
Dougga - Tunisia Top Ten
Grand and impressive, with excellent views across a fertile plain, the ruins of ancient Dougga rank among the most interesting of Tunisia’s tourist destinations. These extremely well-preserved ruins have been inhabited by a series of cultures, notably the Numidians, the Punics, the ancient Greeks and the Romans. It is this mix of cultures which adds to Dougga’s appeal. Some of the sites to look out for include a 3,500-seater theatre, an amphitheatre, a trifolium villa and a six-tiered Punic-Libyan Mausoleum thought to date back to the third century BC. It’s got UNESCO’s seal of approval and it’s got ours too.

El Jem tourist destination Tunisia
Giving Rome’s Colosseum a run for its money, the amphitheatre of El Jem is so well-preserved you can almost imagine gladiators riding through its gates. Constructed between 230 and 238 AD, El Jem Amphitheatre is the largest of its kind in North Africa and would have originally accommodated up to 60,000 spectators. For centuries it survived intact, until it was hit by cannon fire in the seventeenth century. This dealt the amphitheatre a big blow, but not enough to destroy what is now one of Tunisia’s major visitor attractions.

Medina tourist site Tunisia Tunis
There’s really no better way to get under the skin of a city than to walk through it and soak up the sights, sounds and smells. First port of call in Tunis? The Medina. Featuring an impressive collection of mosques, palaces and other buildings, the Medina of Tunis is the bustling and atmospheric old quarter of the city. Top prize in this area goes to the Al-Zaytuna Mosque or “Mosque of Olives”, which is thought to date back to the seventh or eighth century. A close runner up is the Sidi Mehrez Mosque in the Souk Ejjadid, due to its distinctive white domes. Access to the Medina is through the Bab el Bahr, a gateway also known as the Porte de France, a reminder of Tunis’ time under French rule (1881-1956).

5.
Sbeitla
Sbetla Tunisia destination
One of the lesser-known Roman tourist attractions in Tunisia, but a genuine hidden gem, Sbeitla was once a flourishing Roman city. Now consisting of a wide range of fascinating remains, most of the well-preserved structures date back to the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD. The temples of Jupiter and Minerva are particularly impressive. Look down as well and take in some of the stunning mosaic floors. There’s also a museum, which outlines the city’s fascinating past and displays various finds.

bardo museum tunisia tourist destination
How often do you get to see real life instruments connected to human sacrifice? Hopefully not much. This is reason enough to visit Bardo Museum, Tunisia’s national archaeological museum in Tunis. Housed in a beautiful old building which was once a palace, Bardo shows off Tunisia’s fascinating and rich history. On top of instruments relating to human sacrifice there is the most famous artefact in the museum - a mosaic of Virgil shown between the Muse of Tragedy and the Muse of History. Definitely one of Tunisia’s top visitor attractions.

bulla regia tunisia top 10 attraction
It’s hard not to be impressed by the remains of Bulla Regia, a Roman city in north-western Tunisia. What makes them particularly unique are the two-storey dwellings dotted throughout. They were built with one floor underground, protecting the residents against the summer heat and the winter cold. It is also at Bulla Regia that the Roman penchant for laying mosaic floors is shown in all its glory and sophistication. Not one of the most famous tourist attractions of Tunisia, but certainly one of the most interesting.

bursa hill most visited tourist attraction in tunisia
There are many reasons to visit Byrsa Hill. Firstly, it’s part of the Archaeological site of Carthage, having been the military centre of ancient Carthage itself. It’s also where the informative Carthage National Museum is housed - a fascinating place and one of the best Tunisian visitor attractions. Then there are even the ruins of the ancient Punic city. And if none of these are reason enough, Byrsa Hill is the location of the impressive 19th century St Louis Cathedral too. Sold yet?

US cemetry sites Tunisia
The Tunisia Campaign was a key chapter in the Second World War, fought between Allied and Axis forces from 1942 to 1943. Today, Tunisia contains various sites devoted to the Tunisia Campaign and its history. The best way to explore the story of this turbulent and tragic time is probably by visiting the Enfidaville War Cemetery, situated in an area which saw fierce fighting near the end of the campaign. The town of Enfidaville itself was captured by the Allied Eighth Army on 19 April 1943, making it a highly evocative spot. Another important site is the North Africa American Cemetery. This too has the graves of the war dead, alongside a chapel in memory of those who fought and died here.

la malga cisterns most visited tourist sights tunisia
One of the most unique visitor attractions in Tunisia - or indeed anywhere in the world - is the Malga Cisterns.  These atmospheric and haunting Roman cisterns were once part of ancient Carthage. The vast ancient storage tanks once supplied water to the entire city and are testament to just how advanced the Romans were. Converted for other uses after the fall of Rome, the cisterns have weathered the years well and are a hugely interesting site to discover.

statue-of-liberty
Dominating the entrance of New York Habour is the Statue of Liberty, the most famous symbol of freedom in America and one of the most popular sights for tourists in the USA. At a total height of 92.99 metres, Lady Liberty as she is known is one of the tallest women in the world and by far the most impressive (sorry Hilary). Given to the country by the French in 1886 to celebrate the centennial of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence, the copper and steel goddess has welcomed millions of immigrants ever since. She was designed by French artist Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and engineered by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame, while her pedestal was created by the Americans.

alcatraz-US-top-10
In times gone by, most people who found themselves here were desperate to escape from Alcatraz, today however we’d recommend an escape to Alcatraz. An imposing island just off the coast of San Francisco, Alcatraz is home to the most famous prison in America. Initially discovered by a Spanish explorer in 1775, Alcatraz Island served as a US army base from 1853. A decade later it became a Union stronghold during the American Civil War. It was at this time that the island was first used as a prison and over the years it evolved into a network of sites to accommodate an increasing number of inmates. The most famous of these were the gangsters Al Capone, Robert Stroud and George Kelly. As sombre as a trip to Alcatraz sounds, it’s actually very fun, not to mention a much-needed break from the hills of San Fran. Hugely popular with visitors, its fame, its history and its sheer scale means it’s one of the most widely-recognised tourist attractions in the United States.

gettysburg battlefield
Military history enthusiasts will find their calling at Gettyburg Battlefield, a place synonymous with American history and one of the most popular US tourist attractions - both with Americans themselves and with foreign visitors. The Battle of Gettysburg took place between 1 and 3 July 1863. Resulting in over 51,000 casualties, it was one of the deadliest battles in US history. Gettysburg marked a significant turning point in the war and a victory for the Union and today visitors can walk in the footsteps of the soldiers who fought here. As well as the battlefield, visitors can explore the Gettysburg National Military Park which provides answers to anything you ever wanted to know about the Civil War via thousands of monuments, markers and memorials.

the-white-house-USA
If any building has come to define America it would be the White House. Elegant and awe-inspiring at the same time, the White House is the destination for anyone in or near Washington. Original construction began in October 1792 and it housed the first ‘first family’ in 1800, that of President John Adams and First Lady Abigail Adams. Since then, it has been the seat of the US government and residence of presidents for over 200 years. The mind boggles just thinking about all the monumental decisions that have been made within its many walls. Today it is the cornerstone of any visit to America’s capital city and will appear in pretty much every list of top ten tourist attractions in the United States you can find. One interesting fact of many: while white in name, the grey-coloured sandstone walls were not painted white in colour until after 1814, after the British set fire to the building during the War of 1812.

ellis-island - United States Top Ten
The US has always been associated with waves of new arrivals setting out to find a new life and to really understand why that is, you need to visit Ellis Island. Located in Upper New York Bay, Ellis Island was the entry point into the United States for over 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. Today statisticians estimate as many as half of all US citizens can trace their lineage to the immigrants of Ellis Island, making it one of the America’s most important tourist sights. It’s been unofficially called the “Island of Tears” because two percent of migrants were refused entrance to the US at Ellis, but we think it also deserves the title “Island of Cheers” due to its prominent place within the history of the United States, and the informative museum which outlines all of this.

mesa verde
Perhaps the most surprising of all the tourist attractions in the United States is Mesa Verde. Breathtakingly beautiful and full of ancient wonder, Mesa Verde contains a stunning collection of Native American cliff dwellings that could easily win the accolade of best national park in the United States. No wonder then that it was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1978. Mesa Verde - which was once the home of the Pueblos, a Native American people who lived there for over 700 years - is dotted with over 4,000 archaeological treasures. Our personal favourites are the 600 well preserved cliff dwellings, which date all the way back to 600 AD. Made of mortar, sandstone and wooden beams, these dwellings spread across the incredible landscape to provide a sight that is both fascinating and beautifully picturesque.

jamestowne-usa
Where did modern America begin? The answer is Historic Jamestowne. This is the site of the first permanent British settlement in North America, established in 1607, and home to the legend of John Smith and Pocahontas. While their romance might be dead, Historic Jamestown remains very much alive and the sheer number of visitors mark it out as one of the leading US tourist attractions. Situated on the banks of the James River in Virginia, visitors can enjoy walking tours of the premises and learn about the settlement. But don’t be fooled by Jamestowne’s pleasant appearance; the first settlers’ endured a bitter struggle for survival - that Jamestowne exists at all is a remarkable feat. With its pivotal role during the American Revolution and American Civil War as well, Historic Jamestowne is a visit that will stir the imagination.

independence-hall-usa-top-10
As important an American tourist attraction as you will find anywhere in the country, Independence Hall is the place where the nation declared independence from Great Britain on 4 July 1776. As a result of these momentous events, America took a huge step to becoming an independent nation - oh and today everyone in the US now enjoys a national holiday full of fireworks and general festivity too! It was here that the Declaration of Independence was signed, as was the Constitution of the United States, later in 1787. It’s therefore one the biggest historical heavyweights in our list of tourist attractions in the USA. It’s also part of the Independence National Historical Park, which encompasses the important sites of Congress Hall and Liberty Bell Centre, making it the perfect start to any tour of Philadelphia.

martin-luther-king-national-site
Martin Luther King Jr dreamed of a world with equality for all. Today, his dream lives on at the Martin Luther King Jr National Site in Atlanta, Georgia and ranks as one of the most moving and emotive tourist attractions of the United States. Located on the same block as his birthplace and boyhood home, this museum is dedicated to commemorating the life of the leader of the American civil rights movement. The informative space chronicles the various battles won and those that are still ongoing - both within America and outside of it. As a result it is one of the most important contributions to conversations about human rights and an essential stop for anyone who wants to understand the darker side of America’s past.

bunker hill usa attractions
Boston is teaming with history and any visit to this Massachusetts city would be incomplete without viewing the Bunker Hill Monument, an obelisk standing 221 feet tall. One of the most imposing and famous tourist attractions in the United States, the memorial commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill, which took place on 17 June 1775 between the British army and the militias of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island early in the American Revolution. You can enter the Bunker Hill Monument and climb to the top, where you’ll be able to observe stunning panoramic views across the city. But be warned: with no lift and 270 steps, the tour up and down is not for the faint hearted.
